Yay for books and random library trips!
And what did we pick up? --
The Game by Diana Wynne Jones Johnny And The Bomb by Terry Pratchett Sorcery and Cecelia and The Mislaid Magician by Caroline Stevermer and Patricia Wrede The New Policeman by Kate Thompson Leonardo's Shadow by Christopher Grey The Infinite Gift by Charles Yang [nonfiction; all the rest are J or YA fiction]
I took a look in the library catalogue, and it turns out that the Rai-Kirah series by Carol Berg (Transformation, Revelation, Restoration) is no longer in the library system. This distressed me -- I love and adore that series, and I would never have even picked it up in the first place if I hadn't come across it pretty much every day for weeks and months (and dare I say years?) until I finally just gave in and read it already.
The fun of libraries is wandering around looking for books to try, with no obligation to like or keep whatever you happen to pick out that day. And the cool part? Coming across something completely random that you wouldn't have even thought to look for till you found it.
So, what's up with taking books off the shelf/out of circulation due to lack of popularity? What is the purpose of this? Selling the books doesn't make the libraries enough money to really make much difference... is shelf space really that precious? Is it worth it?
[I sort of want to say things like "I can't believe you're trading Transformation for Meg Cabot's latest waste of space," but that's precisely what I don't want to be saying. I don't, can't, dictate the relative value of various works to the general public.]
But it makes me sad, sometimes, to see thirty copies of Harry Potter on the shelf and know of all the books that aren't there.
--
I recommended the book to the librarian, anyway. She filled out a little piece of paper with the title and author and publication date, and we'll see what happens.

'cause Frayda's doing it--
To test my personality awareness, I pick 5 or 6 adjectives that I think describe me, and then I have other people pick 5 or 6 adjectives that they think describe me, and then we see how they overlap. How cool is that?

Anyone and everyone is welcome to do it, so get started!

Dear Santa...
Dear Santa,
This year I've been busy!
In February I stole cnlohr's purse (-30 points). In March I donated bone marrow to timorene in a life-saving procedure (300 points). In June I helped paladinguardian see the light (8 points). Last Tuesday I helped kissenliebe hide a body (-173 points). Last Monday on a flight to Colorado Springs, I stole the emergency flight information card (-40 points).
Overall, I've been nice (65 points). For Christmas I deserve an Easy-Bake Oven!
Sincerely, jinxerdear |

Your strength: Your intense optimism
Your weakness: You shy away from exploring your talents

I shouldn't watch things like Take The Lead, they only encourage me to stare wistfully at UMBC's dance program.

So I went to Esther's l'chaim thing and I did not wear a tshirt! Yay! And it was so amazing, there were lots of Iranians making lots of Iranian noises and doing Iranian things, and everyone was speaking Farsi, and Esther was all cute and excited and she had a little boy.
And then Rivka made reference to the little boy as Esther's 'thing', and I was so proud.
Wedding's in late Nov/early Dec, and Esther makes me sad because she's moving to Brooklyn.

S called, and Bobby was here, and there was movie watching, so I hung up and I said I'd call back later.
It's later, where are you, S!? You need to answer your phone, woman.
--
Also, I saw a shiny movie.
--
Also, Bobby recounted a conversation he'd had with Patrick today that went something like,
Patrick: *says something* Bobby: *says something in reply* Patrick: Yeah, that's what Leah said... *says something else* Bobby: *makes a joke* Patrick: Yeah, Leah said that too. Bobby: ... *scared*
--
So tomorrow there is a football game, during which Leah shall be watching a kidlet while his mom does homework and his daddy smokes his hookah with his things. Kidlet will be here, since tobacco is bad for cute little lungs.
Note that Leah has two movies out: Producers and Real Genius. People are invited to come watch.
